Torfhaus

At an altitude of 820 metres Torfhaus is the highest located site in Lower Saxony; it is a district of Altenau in the Upper-Harz region. It has a good visibility of the Brocken and the Harzer foothills.

The small built-up area mainly consists of restaurants catering for day-trippers, youth hostels, ski huts and a large parking area. Proposed at the moment is a holiday resort with 17 holiday homes all of which will be fitted out with a sauna and are facing the Brocken. Torfhaus is the highest settlement Lower Saxony's and with the building of the new holiday resort promises to be one of the first meeting points for Harzer holiday makers. The Bundestrasse 4 (A-Road) is the main road axis coming from Brunswick in the north going over Torfhaus in the direction of Braunlage and continuing on further into the South and East Harz regions.

During the summer, Torfhaus is a starting point for hikers wishing to follow the Goethe path to the Brocken; in the winter the skiers, cross country skiers and toboggan riders enjoy to the full, the pleasures it has to offer. Torfhaus is considered to be a relatively snow guaranteed area. This mean, that when in other areas of the Harz, winter sports are not possible, it can be said that on Torfhaus they are already enjoying this pleasure.

In Torfhaus not only can you expect the ski lift 'Great Torfhaus lift' at the Rinderkopf and the toboggan lift 'Brocken view' but also gastronomy, ski-, snowboard- and toboggan hire as well as a  skiing school, a youth hostel and a school holiday home from the region of Hannover. This means all your needs are provided for. A visit to the  National park visitors center is merited.

It's also worth your while to visit Altenau. Here you will find the private brewery, a herbal park with a pagoda and much more; or relax in the  Cristal thermal baths 'Heißer Brocken'. You will also find many over-night stays in Altenau and the surroundings.

In the winter there are many prepared cross-country ski tracks and winter footpaths, even in the Brocken area and in the over 900m high Bruchberg.
