The Ski Lift Großer Torfhauslift 'Am Rinderkopf'
'The ski lift is working when the flashing light is turning'
This catchphrase exists for years and it's still true today.
Not only alpine skiers but also beginners and snow boarders are attracted to the Großen Torfhaus lift 'Am Rinderkopf' just below the German youth hostel and the transmitter mast from the NDR. The ski lift is situated on the road to Altenau and here is also a skiing school.
The downhill slope is 400 metres long and is prepared regularly. The height difference of the slope is 80 metres.
A free parking area can be found directly at the lift.
The ski lift is round about 800m away from the toboggan lift and the parking area:
You can travel by train to the nearby Bad Harzburg and from there with the Bus route 820 directly to Torfhaus. Here is the link to the timetable

On Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays it is possible to reach the ski lift from Altenau with the bus route 462.

On Weekends and Bank holidays connect the RODELBUS Osterode - Kamschlacken - Altenau - TORFHAUS.

When you are in the local area you can reach the lift from different areas:
- from Altenau over the Steile-wand-strasse (L504) in the direction of Torfhaus
- from Bad Harzburg or Braunlage by following the B4 to Torfhaus and then by turning onto L504 in the direction of Altenau.
